This kind of subject matter could turn dangerously depressing, but Charlie Bartlett is a movie that dares to be touching, funny and achingly emotional all at the same time. When isnt he a good addition to any film The Bigger Picture: Charlie Bartlett (Anton Yelchin) is a sweet kid like any other, except his dads in prison, he lives in a huge mansion and his moms a pill popper. As played (perfectly) by a quavering Hope Davis, Marilyn Bartlett smokes, drinks and runs up some mean pharmacy bills. Ultimately, though, its Charlie who has to take care of Charlieemotionally, anyway. Its this resilience that keeps him humming along after expulsions from private schools and altercations with the class bully during his first day ever atgasppublic school. His troubles dont last when he realizes kids want to pay big money for his prescription meds. And when he doesnt have pills to sell, it turns out simply listening to his clients is all they really need. Enter Dr. Charlie Bartlett. His posh office: the school loo. Emotionally revived, the student body rises against the dictatorial school leadership, causing big trouble for principal Gardner (Downey Jr.), who also happens to be the father of the comely Susan (Kat Dennings), Charlies main squeeze. Theres no drug that can untangle this mess, and Charlie cant coast by anymore on his charm. Then again, the troubled principal has his own issues to untangle. Charlie Bartlett How To Get ItIts this unlikely duo that makes the movie, as each forces the other to figure out whats missing in his life and how to get it. Without preaching about big pharma or tongue-lashing absent parents, Charlie Bartlett makes its point. The movie also takes the time to embrace the adolescent experiencethe exhilaration of connecting across clique lines and fighting authority for the benefit of all. The 180a Second Opinion: There are truly deep emotional issues with Charlie and his mom, and they are touched on but never dug up. It would have added an even more solid foundation to the movie, which delights a little too much in laughing off a lot of dark themes.
